The Nigerian is a small manageable, productive, and adaptable goat breed. Although their origins began on
the African Continent, U.S. breeders have consistently utilized the best genetics to produce this versatile
breed. Because of their small stature, Nigerians are wonderful as 4-H/FAA projects for children. Older
people, like myself, have an easier time maneuvering around the pen and show ring. We milk our
Nigerian Does and will be completing ADGA 305 milk testing in the spring.
Urban Homesteads, located throughout metropolitan areas, Country Homesteads and Hobby farms have
added these animals for a self-sufficient and sustainable family lifestyle . In this economical downturn,
more people are searching for alternatives to their growing food consumption; turning backyards into edible
landscapes, chicken flocks, and adding milk goats.
The average Nigerian Doe, milked twice a day, produces between 2 and 4 pounds of milk. Of course there
are exceptions. You may find a Doe who produces less or more than that. The butterfat can range
anywhere between 5% and 10% depending on the time of year and is wonderful for cheesemaking. You do
not have to breed a Doe every year to keep a supply of milk. Goats can milk for years without having to
breed them. The production will go down in the fall and come back up in the spring. Always ask the
breeder if they milk their goats! Not all breeders milk their goats long term.
Nigerians make great pets, are wonderful show animals, and produce quality milk. Even if you think you
won’t be needed a registered goat, never say never. You will feed an unregistered goat the same as a
registered goat, so you might as well know the background and genetics of the goat you purchase. I hope
you will continue to browse the website and if you have any questions, comments, or just want to talk about
goats, please feel free to email.
If you are interested in a little larger goat, please visit the Mini pages. Wonderful things come in small
packages!
